What is a paranda?

A paranda is a traditional Punjabi hair adornment woven into a braid.

Braiding belongs to everyone

Braiding is one of humanity's oldest and most widespread traditions. We encourage you to explore the braiding traditions of your own heritage and share them with us at the next Paranda Party.

How to braid a paranda

Step 1: Tie ponytail
Tie your hair into a secure ponytail.

Step 2: Secure paranda
Insert a bobby pin through the center connection of the paranda, then push the bobby pin into the ponytail elastic band.

Step 3: Section hair
Section your hair into 3 parts and add a paranda strand to each section of hair.

Step 4: Begin braiding
Alternate right over middle, left over middle, keeping the paranda strings blended into each section as you go. The tassel will naturally travel down as you braid.

Step 5: Braid to the end
Continue braiding all the way down until you've braided all of your hair.

Step 6: Secure
Tie off your braid with ribbon at the bottom. Let the tassels hang freely below.

Don't forget to SWING THAT PARANDA!
