خاص is Enough

2024

Clay, Ceramic

$230

This piece is titled خاص is Enough. Khalas — enough. It is about rising up and fighting back against injustice and oppression, and about the many forms that fight can take.

This is not a real Molotov cocktail. It is a non-functional object — a work of art. But it is also one way to fight. It stands as a symbol that there are many ways we can all contribute to liberation: with our voices, our bodies, our art, our refusal. None of us are spectators. All our actions are fuel.

And yet — there is a lot of discourse around who is allowed to stand up and fight for liberation. Why is it justified for some and deemed violent for others? Who gets to be a freedom fighter, and who gets to be a threat? Who writes their own story, and whose gaze decides?

خاص is Enough sits inside that contradiction. It is not a weapon. It is a question we will all need to ask ourselves sooner or later.

Car Nazzal (they/them) is a ceramic sculptor and cultural worker based in the SF Bay Area, California. They make midsized conceptual, and interactive sculptures that become "inquiry stations" for participants. Their work explores Palestinian identity, queer expansiveness, and the layered complexities of existing in a liminal spaces of diaspora and the binary. Trained in liberation psychology (Bachelors of Science and MA), Nazzal plays with the psyche's rebellious undercurrents, creating sculptures that challenge assumptions and embrace contradiction.

Nazzal completed residencies at Makaan Residency inside Minnesota Street Project Foundation Studios (2026), Mendocino Art Center (2025) and Bread and Puppet Theater (2024). They are the recipient of a 2026 Multicultural Fellowship from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA).

Their work has been exhibited most recently at Minnesota Street Project Foundation Studio Gallery for their second solo exhibition titled Listening.
