Up In Flames was conceived in response to the Los Angeles fires in 2025. As a former resident 
of LA County, I felt deeply moved and shocked by the images I was witnessing. At the same 
time, I was struck by how easily we all forget such moments as soon as the immediate news 
coverage dies down. 
Up in Flames is a commentary on how we lose interest after a disaster occurs, in part because 
we are distracted by so many other things vying for our attention. Our phones are a constant 
source of attention grabbing notifications. The piece is also a commentary on how we are 
failing to fully grasp the magnitude of climate change because we would rather not think about 
things that scare us, especially when our immediate experience seems unchanged.
